(Excerpt from The Sunday Times Magazine, Spectrum)
“The Brooklyn-based photographer Bryan Schumaat travelled across the American West documenting working life in small mountain towns and mining communities. ‘This body of work is a meditation on small-town life,’ he says. ‘The landscape and, more importantly, the inner landscapes of common men.’ Equipped with a large-format view camera, Schutmaat photographed strangers he met including residents of Silver City, Mexico (top left) and Kellogg, Idaho (bottom right). Other subject included an abandoned home in the Red Mountain Mining District in Colorado, an arid cemetery in Tonopah, Nevada, and escapism in the form of a western film in Goldfield, Nevada.”
